Helen Grogan is a Naarm/Melbourne-based artist and founder of Open Practice Studio (OPS). She is currently serving as Associate Researcher/Associate Archivist at Liquid Architecture, Australia and undertaking independent research at De Appel Archive, The Netherlands.
Helen is committed to the nuances and complexities of ephemeral art practices and their unique documentary cultures. Her experience in this field includes work with Performance Review, and Open Archive in Naarm/Melbourne, The Kitchen Archive in New York City, and curator Hannah Matthews’ cross-disciplinary exhibitions ‘Framed Movements’ at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, and ‘Action/Response’ at Dance Massive. Helen established OPS in 2022 as a flexible advisory service, supporting artists and independent arts organisations to develop critical, generative, and poetic register systems.
As a practising artist, Helen's work has been presented in institutions including the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Ian Potter Museum of Art, National Gallery of Victoria and No More Poetry in Naarm/Melbourne; Art Gallery of New South Wales and KNULP in Eora/Sydney; Samstag Museum and Adelaide Arts Festival in Tarntanya/Adelaide; Galerie Stadtpark, Krems; Rijksakaemie, Amsterdam; HAU Hebbel am Ufer and Kontext Festival in Berlin; and Aoyama Meguro, Tokyo.
Helen is an experienced university lecturer and has contributed to programs of The Victorian College of the Arts; RMIT University School of Art; Deakin University; Adelaide Central School of Art; and The Photography Studies College.
